Police Patrol Car Kills Woman in Her 60s Responding to Emergency Call
A tragic accident occurred where a woman in her 60s, who had collapsed on the street, was struck and killed by a police patrol car responding to a report about her condition. The incident raises questions about safety protocols during police emergency responses and accident prevention measures.
The accident happened around 10:50 PM on the 2nd, on a side street in Mapo-gu, Seoul. A citizen discovered the woman in her 60s lying on the ground, reported it to the police, and the responding patrol car subsequently drove over her in a dark alley, failing to detect her presence. The woman was found to have been lying in the alley after consuming alcohol.
The patrol car's inability to detect the fallen woman was attributed to the dark environment of the alley and limited visibility from within the vehicle. At the time of the accident, the patrol car was driven by an officer in their 20s, with another officer as a passenger in the front seat.
The woman was transported to a hospital after being hit by the patrol car but was pronounced dead. Police have booked the driver, a young officer, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and are investigating the details of the accident.
