Battery Company SES AI Pivots to AI-Driven Material Development
Battery manufacturing firm SES AI is charting a new course for survival by comprehensively revising its business strategy to an AI-based material discovery platform. The Massachusetts-based company, which has dedicated over the past decade to manufacturing high-performance batteries, is now attempting to transform into a technology-centric firm to adapt to the rapidly changing market environment.
SES AI, which previously aimed for mass production of lithium metal batteries for electric vehicles, is now shifting its focus to its AI material discovery platform. Current battery production is being limited to niche markets such as drones, with its core business reorganized around the material discovery platform.
CEO Qichao Hu stated that the majority of Western battery companies are struggling to build sustainable businesses. Indeed, several major electric vehicle battery companies in the US have gone bankrupt in recent months, prompting related firms, including SES AI, to undergo strategic shifts. This AI material discovery platform will be used to develop materials that can be licensed or sold to other battery companies.
