The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOED) is joining hands with Seoul National University (SNU) to transition towards AI-powered future education. The two parties will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 30th for 'Future Education Cooperation in the Era of Great Transformation.' This MOU is being pursued based on the recognition of the need to adopt new educational paradigms amidst rapid changes driven by AI and digital transformation.

Through this collaboration, both sides will focus on research for competency-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment. They also plan to work on enhancing the AI-based essay and short-answer evaluation system 'ChaeumAI' and strengthening teachers' AI utilization capabilities.

The implementation of a 'Korean Baccalaureate (KB)' model, based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, will be pursued. Additionally, they will collaborate on establishing a training system for math and science teachers to lead in the AI era, and on cultivating experts in career and academic planning guidance following the full implementation of the high school credit system.

The SMOED stated that through this agreement, it will go beyond mere joint research to build a new cooperation model that directly connects secondary education sites with universities and research institutions, thereby helping students adapt to change and supporting the growth of teachers and parents. Jeong Geun-sik, Superintendent of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, commented that the MOU is significant as it represents a first step towards innovation for the future, by jointly considering on-site research, training, and teacher education programs in preparation for the changing future society.
