AI Boom Fuels New Debates Across Technology

The exponential advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is expanding the 'front lines' of debate across related technology fields, from environmental discussions to arguments about technological limits. The driving forces behind AI development stem from three key technological advancements: progress in ultra-high-speed computing power, the emergence of high-bandwidth memory, and technology that integrates distributed Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) into massive supercomputers.

These technological leaps have quelled skepticism that AI computing power is nearing its limits. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI and co-founder of Google DeepMind, explained that AI development will continue.

Behind the advancement of AI technology lies a deepening environmental debate fueled by the surge in the use of artificial turf, often referred to as 'AstroTurf'. The area covered by artificial turf installations across the United States grew from 7 million square meters (m²) in 2001 to approximately 79 million m² in 2024, an increase of nearly 11-fold.
