Following the successful completion of its Artemis 2 mission, NASA is now fully ramping up preparations for the Artemis 3 mission, which aims to send humans back to the lunar surface. Rick Henfling, the flight director who oversaw the Artemis 2 mission, indicated that the "next mission is very close" shortly after the crew's successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, signaling the imminent launch of Artemis 3. This signifies the full-scale acceleration of follow-up technological preparations after Artemis 2, which marked the first human journey to the Moon in 53 years.

The Artemis 3 mission's core objective will be practicing docking maneuvers with commercial lunar landers in Earth orbit. This process serves as a crucial technology verification step for future lunar returns, with astronauts rehearsing these docking techniques using the Orion capsule.

Elon Musk's Starship and Jeff Bezos's Blue Moon lander are competing to be the commercial landers used for NASA's lunar missions. These companies are accelerating their technological development for the program's first lunar landing, currently scheduled for 2028.
