The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit South Korea tomorrow (the 14th) to discuss North Korea's nuclear material production activities with the government.

North Korea is understood to be producing both uranium and plutonium, essential for its nuclear weapons program. Uranium is processed from ore mined in Pyeongsan, North Hwanghae Province, through refining stages to produce 'yellowcake,' an intermediate raw material. Highly enriched uranium is manufactured in Yongbyon, Guseong, and Kangseon. Plutonium is reportedly produced via reprocessing at Yongbyon's 5-megawatt reactor.

The South Korean government assesses that North Korea is expanding its production capabilities, including the additional construction of uranium enrichment facilities in Yongbyon. Recent signs of facility maintenance have also been detected at Yongbyon's 50-megawatt reactor, where construction was halted in the 1990s, prompting close monitoring by intelligence agencies.
