As Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell halted his bid for California governor and stepped down from Congress, his past attempt at the 2020 U.S. presidential election has been brought up again. After abandoning his run for California governor, Swalwell soon resigned from his federal House seat. His brief history challenging the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 has once again drawn attention.

At the time, in January 2019, Rep. Swalwell visited New Hampshire, the first primary state, to solidify his political base. In media interviews, he expressed confidence in his presidential run, stating he was 'sure it would be a smooth journey.'

Swalwell officially announced his candidacy on a popular talk show on April 8, 2019, participated in a Democratic presidential candidate debate in June of the same year, but suspended his campaign on July 8.
