Bank of Korea Governor Nominee Hearing Report Fails to Pass for First Time

The parliamentary confirmation hearing results report for Shin Hyun-song, nominee for Bank of Korea governor, was not adopted due to issues concerning his child's nationality and a lack of documentation, halting the screening process for a central bank governor nominee for the first time since the introduction of such hearings in 2014. The National Assembly's Finance and Economy Committee rejected the report's adoption on the 15th for these reasons, marking an unprecedented situation in the central bank governor confirmation procedure.

Concerns were raised that Shin may have insufficient understanding of domestic economic issues due to a lack of residency experience in Korea. Issues pointed out included the failure to report the loss of nationality for his foreign-national child, false address registration, questionable real estate transactions between family members, and potential conflicts of interest arising from foreign currency asset holdings.

Rep. Cheon Ha-ram of the Reform Party raised suspicions that Shin's eldest daughter, after acquiring British citizenship, failed to report the loss of her Korean nationality and registered her domestic address. Shin explained this was to resolve issues related to her status as a registered absentee. Regarding suspicions raised by Rep. Park Seong-hoon of the People Power Party concerning Shin's academic records at Korea University, Shin explained the background related to the UK's high school system and the recognition of university course completion.

National Assembly Finance and Economy Committee Chairwoman Im-i-ja requested that additional documents, including immigration records and information on domestic assets related to the child's unreported loss of nationality, be submitted by the following day. Shin Hyun-song expressed his regret to the public for causing concern over issues such as his child's nationality.

The committee chair stated that the schedule for adopting the report would be determined later, based on the additional documents to be submitted.
