SK Chairman Chey Tae-won, Roh Soh-yeong Divorce Case Referred to Mediation
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and Art Center Nabi Director Roh Soh-yeong's divorce lawsuit has entered court mediation proceedings to finalize property division. The Seoul High Court's Family Division 1 has set the mediation date for the property division between the two parties for May 13 at 10 AM. The key issues in the retrial are the scope of assets subject to division and Director Roh's contribution.
The couple, who married in September 1988, saw their divorce issue become official in 2015 when Chairman Chey revealed the existence of an extramarital child. Chairman Chey filed for divorce mediation in July 2017, but it failed, and a formal divorce lawsuit began in February 2018. In December 2019, Director Roh agreed to the divorce and filed a counterclaim.
The property division amount has fluctuated through the court's various levels. The first-instance court ordered 66.5 billion won in property division and 100 million won in alimony. The second-instance court set the property division amount at 1.3808 trillion won and alimony at 2 billion won. Last October, the Supreme Court overturned the second-instance court's property division ruling and remanded the case to the Seoul High Court. The Supreme Court ruled that the 30 billion won in slush funds from the late former President Roh Tae-woo could not be considered as Director Roh's contribution to SK Group's growth. However, the 2 billion won in alimony recognized by the second-instance court has been finalized.
