Signs of Expansion Detected at North Korea's Yongbyon Nuclear Facility

Satellite image analysis has revealed the new construction of a uranium enrichment facility at North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear complex, which could be used for nuclear weapons development. Satellite photos taken earlier this month captured a building with a blue roof, which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) analyzed as having recently entered its final stages of completion. The 5,760-square-meter facility is equipped with operational necessities such as generators, fuel storage tanks, and cooling systems, and signs of power supply have also been observed.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that North Korea's nuclear weapons production capacity has increased. The IAEA added that in addition to the 5-megawatt reactor, reprocessing facility, and light-water reactor at Yongbyon, it has confirmed the activation of facilities outside Yongbyon.

This development is expected to complicate efforts to find solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue, given the country is believed to possess significant nuclear capabilities. Although the IAEA raises the possibility of 'overestimation' due to the impossibility of on-site inspections since 2009, former U.S. President Donald Trump himself referred to North Korea as a 'nuclear state' on multiple occasions.
