Seoul Education Office Marks Earth Day with Environmental Campaign
Marking Earth Day (April 22), the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is holding campaigns at elementary, middle, and high schools to raise awareness about the importance of climate change and environmental protection, and to encourage students' active participation. This educational initiative aims to guide students in contributing to the creation of a healthy planet for future generations.
As average temperatures rise due to global warming, the severity of the climate crisis is increasing. Consequently, enhancing climate crisis awareness and providing practical education for students, who represent the future generation, are crucial.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will provide Earth Day educational materials to elementary, middle, and high schools within its jurisdiction. Card news, designed for easy participation by students and staff, will be produced and distributed, containing information on the seriousness of climate change and practical methods for carbon neutrality in daily life. Notably, schools and households will be encouraged to participate in the nationwide "Lights Out Campaign" from 8:00 PM to 8:10 PM on Earth Day itself, April 22. This campaign involves turning off unnecessary lights for ten minutes to join in a small act for the planet.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated that they hope students will understand the reality of the climate crisis and grow into agents of change who build a sustainable future through small, everyday actions. The office will continue to support diverse environmental education linked with school curricula to strengthen students' climate literacy and capabilities as global citizens.
