Youth Employment Rate Hits Record Low Amid War Concerns
South Korea's youth employment market is facing difficulties, with the employment rate hitting its lowest point and the unemployment rate reaching its highest since March 2021.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor diagnosed that the prolonged war in the Middle East is increasing economic uncertainty, leading companies to reduce hiring, which in turn could result in a shortage of jobs for young people. In fact, a contraction or postponement of new hires has been observed in parts manufacturing and import/export-related companies.
In response, the government has decided to address the employment crisis through the rapid implementation of a supplementary budget. The ministry conducted on-site surveys through centers like the University Job Plus Center. The survey results indicated that young job seekers are experiencing higher barriers to entry due to concerns about reduced new hiring stemming from the prolonged Middle East war and a preference for experienced hires.
The ministry plans to swiftly formulate a supplementary budget to expand support for youth employment, including work experience and vocational training programs, and will proceed with the rapid selection of operating agencies and training courses, along with focused promotional efforts. Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Young-hoon stated, "We will swiftly execute the supplementary budget for youth employment so that young people facing difficulties due to the Middle East war and other factors can feel a tangible change." He added, "We will preemptively respond to signs of crisis to break the chain of the Middle East war leading to an employment crisis."
