Medical School Rush Deepens for 2026 Admissions, With 89% of Top-Tier Students Applying

In the 2026 early admissions cycle, 89.0% (502 out of 564) of top-tier students with GPAs in the 1.0-1.09 range in the natural sciences applied to medical schools, marking a 3.0 percentage point increase from 86.0% in the 2025 cycle. This indicates that the rush to medical schools has intensified despite a reduction in their enrollment quotas.

In contrast to the 1.0 GPA bracket, the proportion of students applying to medical schools decreased for those with GPAs in the 1.1 range, falling from 76.9% to 75.1%, and for the 1.2 range, dropping from 64.5% to 56.7%. This suggests a more concentrated trend of medical school preference among the very top-ranked students.

A clear preference for medical schools was also evident among top-tier humanities students, with 29.2% applying to medical programs for the 2026 early admissions cycle, a figure similar to the 29.3% recorded in the 2025 cycle.

The average number of applications submitted per medical school applicant rose to 2.73, up from 2.59 in the 2025 cycle. Additionally, 52.8% of applicants applied to other medical-related fields (dentistry, oriental medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine), an increase from 49.5% last year.

The rise in application rates for the 1.0 GPA bracket, even with reduced medical school quotas, demonstrates that medical schools are effectively irreplaceable targets for top-tier students. The trend of even top-tier humanities students expanding their applications to medical and other health-related fields signifies that the 'medical schools at all costs' phenomenon is spreading regardless of academic track.
