German Ifo Index Drops to 84.4 in April 2026

Germany's corporate business sentiment index for April 2026 recorded 84.4. This figure fell by 1.9 points compared to the previous month and was lower than market expectations. The Ifo Business Climate Index, based on survey results from German business managers, reached its lowest level since May 2020.

Both companies' current economic assessments and future outlooks have turned pessimistic. The Ifo Institute for Economic Research analyzed that the repercussions of the Middle East conflict have impacted the German economy. They stated that rising energy prices and increased uncertainty have dampened corporate morale, making it difficult to regain recovery momentum.

Reflecting this situation, the German Ministry of Economic Affairs has lowered its growth forecast for 2026 and 2027 while raising its inflation outlook. Commerzbank commented that if the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues, Germany's growth rate could decrease, raising concerns of a recession.
