SK Hynix Bonuses Hit Record High, But Local Businesses Remain Sluggish
SK Hynix paid out high bonuses to its employees in February, equivalent to 2,964% of their base salary. However, the warmth did not properly spread to businesses surrounding the company, indicating it did not significantly impact the local economy. A KBS analysis of sales data from businesses near SK Hynix in Icheon, conducted with Korea Credit Data, revealed that the overall sales growth rate in Icheon City last year was only 6.8%. Furthermore, sales in February, when bonuses were paid out, actually decreased by 1.7% compared to the previous year. From 2023 to last year, the proportion of sales during late-night hours (7 PM-12 AM) gradually decreased, while the proportion of sales during lunchtime (11 AM-2 PM) showed an upward trend. Last year, sales in Icheon City's restaurant industry grew by only 6.5% compared to the previous year, and profit margins in Icheon's business districts recorded a -2.45% decrease year-on-year.

This data analysis has confirmed for the first time that, despite the strong performance of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the 'trickle-down effect' of large corporations' successes to surrounding local business districts has disappeared compared to the past. Changes in dining-out culture post-COVID-19, advancements in transportation, and the spread of online shopping have all combined to alter the economic warmth felt by business districts near large factories.
