Chicago Hospital Shooting Leaves Officer Dead, Suspect Arrested

A shooting occurred early on the 25th involving police officers transporting a prisoner at Chicago's Swedish Hospital. One officer died in the incident, and another was injured.

The deceased officer was a 38-year-old male, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. The injured officer is a 57-year-old male, a 21-year veteran, whose condition is critical.

The suspect, an inmate, was arrested at the hospital and is in custody. The suspect had initially been arrested on robbery charges. A second firearm was recovered at the scene.

Despite hospital security and metal detection procedures upon arrival, and the presence of officers, the inmate being transported for medical treatment fired a weapon. No other police team members or patients were injured in the shooting.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called the incident a 'very difficult moment for our city' and asked for prayers for the deceased officer's family and the recovery of the critically injured officer. The hospital is cooperating with the police investigation.
