Trump's DC Restoration Effort Draws Rare Praise from Opposition
The landmark restoration projects in Washington D.C. initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump are gaining attention ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary. These initiatives have drawn rare positive evaluations from the Democratic Party and have served as a catalyst for the revitalization of long-neglected city symbols. Even critics within progressive circles are positively assessing the changes, such as the Meridian Hill Park fountain resuming its flow after years of disuse.
The urban beautification projects in Washington D.C. promoted by the Trump administration have accelerated in recent months, with particular speed given to related construction and landscaping efforts leading up to the 250th-anniversary celebrations. As some city fountains were recently reactivated early this week, reactions emerged among Democratic supporters expressing joy that "the city is coming back to life." One progressive figure commented on their social media account, calling it "the best thing this administration has done."
The 13-tiered cascading fountain at Meridian Hill Park was brought back online at the end of this month following repairs to wall cracks and landscaping renovations. This fountain, one of the longest in North America, had ceased operation after the National Park Service closed the lower section of the park in 2020 for repairs. At Lafayette Square, located in downtown Washington D.C., a new fountain facility has also begun operation.
A Democratic official commented that all fountains in the capital should be functioning and expressed relief that the Trump administration has achieved this. One critic stated, "You have to give credit where credit is due," adding that "the Trump administration is finally repairing the fountains around Washington D.C. that haven't worked for years." According to the National Park Service, nine fountains have currently been restored and are operational, with the remaining nine slated for maintenance and system upgrades.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers noted that even Democratic figures are publicly praising the president for his efforts to make D.C. safe and beautiful again. Rogers added, "Our nation's capital will be more magnificent than ever for America's 250th anniversary, thanks to President Trump's efforts." President Donald Trump has requested a budget of $10 billion for urban improvement projects related to the 250th anniversary.
