Approximately 40 students from Hancock Middle School in Mississippi averted a major accident by stopping the bus themselves after the driver suddenly lost consciousness while driving. The students' courageous actions shone through during the critical moments when the driver began to lose consciousness from breathing difficulties, with no time to retrieve medication.

Sixth-grader Jackson Cassnave (12), who was sitting in the back of the bus, noticed it veering out of its lane and shaking. He ran to the driver's seat and took control of the steering wheel. Following his lead, 12-year-old Darius Clark applied the brakes, and the students managed to bring the bus to a stop against the median barrier. 13-year-old Keigh Clark called 911. Eighth-grader Destiny Cornelius (15) and 13-year-old McKenzie Finch assisted the driver with her medication. Finch also noticed the driver's phone ringing incessantly and contacted the school's transportation team to report the situation.

Driver Leah Taylor, upon recovering, expressed her gratitude for the students' swift actions, stating they navigated them through the crisis. The students were recognized for their bravery during a school-wide assembly last Friday and will be treated to a celebratory lunch next week. School Principal Melissa Sossah commented that the students' actions required immense courage and that their initiative demonstrated their character.
