The Current State and Future Challenges of AI Transformation in Daegu-Gyeongbuk
News reports indicate that a converged data center, combining quantum computing capabilities that surpass supercomputers with domestic AI semiconductors, will be established in Gumi. As the first installment of its year-long special series examining the current state of AI's great transformation in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and forecasting future challenges, KBS Daegu Broadcasting Station has covered the news of building a data center integrating the latest quantum and AI technologies.
Nine organizations, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Gumi City, and various companies, have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a converged data center that combines quantum computing technology with domestic AI semiconductors for regional manufacturing processes. This center's key feature will be the integrated operation of neural processing units and quantum computing units, a first in Korea. The data center being built will employ a method where quantum technology supports complex calculations used by AI, which are then processed by domestic intelligent semiconductors.
Regional companies will be able to establish a foundation for AI utilization in diverse fields such as robotics, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals. Following the facility's construction, operational consulting services will also be provided, including manufacturing process optimization and the deployment of AI services for environmental regulation compliance.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province anticipates this data center will serve as the foundation for creating a new industrial ecosystem that integrates quantum and artificial intelligence technologies. The province also plans to accelerate follow-up support, such as nurturing quantum-specialized talent and discovering related startups, leveraging this agreement.
