Leading AI Expert: Korea Has Optimal Conditions to Become an AI Powerhouse

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, assessed that South Korea possesses the optimal standing to emerge as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) during his visit, the first in 10 years since the AlphaGo matches. He predicted the arrival of the era of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within five years, stating that overcoming the challenges of the AI transition period would usher in a golden age for scientific development. Hassabis forecast that a golden age of scientific advancement would arrive during the AI transition period.

Hassabis signed an MOU with the Ministry of Science and ICT at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, the historic venue of the 'AlphaGo matches' in 2016. He evaluated Korea as having the best position to become an AI powerhouse, citing its excellent universities like Seoul National University and KAIST, top-tier research talent, and a robust AI industrial base encompassing everything from semiconductors, the core of AI, to robotics. He noted that partnerships already exist with leading Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Hyundai Motor, and that he planned to further expand and develop these partnerships through meetings with these firms during his visit.

Through this MOU, Google DeepMind will pursue collaboration with the Korean government in three key areas: model sharing, nurturing next-generation AI talent, and discussions on international AI safety standards. DeepMind will support scientific progress by sharing its models with Korean research institutions and focus on developing future AI talent through internships and AI Hub training. Additionally, it will jointly discuss international standards and procedures in the AI safety sector, an area of interest for the Korean government.
