Virginia Redistricting Dispute Heads to State Supreme Court

Virginia Republicans and Democrats are engaged in a legal dispute before the state Supreme Court over redistricting maps that could upend the current 6-5 delegation split drawn under court-imposed maps from 2020.

Republican attorney Thomas McCarthy argued that the redistricting plan, approved by voters, was pushed through based on the convenience of a specific majority, rather than the rule of law.

Democrats, in response, requested the court uphold the proposed amendments, stating that they complied with all procedures by voters and the state legislature. A Democratic attorney countered that the proposed amendments were validly ratified by the people, and the court should not accept a challenge seeking to invalidate an already completed democratic process.

Virginia's current congressional delegation consists of six Democrats and five Republicans, based on district maps drawn by the court in 2020. If the court sides with the Republicans, the redistricting plan could be overturned.
