US Lawmaker Pushes for UN Resolution Against Iran's Maritime Threats

U.S. Representative Mike Waltz is pushing for a United Nations Security Council resolution to stop Iran's actions of laying mines in international shipping lanes. This move is heightening concerns over the safety of vital waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz, and the stability of global energy markets. Through this resolution, the United States intends to hold Iran accountable for its maritime threats, demand a halt to mine-laying, disclosure of mine locations, and cooperation in securing humanitarian passages.

Rep. Waltz emphasized that international waters cannot be weaponized and that a precedent cannot be set where a single nation's conflict resolution methods harm the economies of other countries. He pointed out that civilian ship crews, uninvolved in conflicts, are suffering due to Iran's actions.

Meanwhile, U.S. special forces recently sank six threatening Iranian small vessels. Russia and China had previously vetoed a UN resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz following an Iranian airstrike on February 28, 2026.
