Nvidia Earnings Report: A Gauge of AI Chip Market Dominance

Nvidia, the undisputed leader in the AI chip market, is facing challenges from rivals developing their own chips ahead of its earnings announcement on May 20.

After establishing a dominant position in the AI system training chip market for years, Nvidia is now confronting intensified competition in the 'inference' market, which specializes in running AI systems and processing real-time tasks. This inference market is significantly larger and more competitive than the training market.

Alphabet (GOOG) is challenging Nvidia's established ecosystem with its self-developed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Amazon (AMZN) with its chip business including Trainium, and Intel (INTC) and AMD with processors suited for small-scale, cost-sensitive workloads.

To defend its market position, Nvidia has acquired inference-specialized startups and unveiled new CPUs and AI systems. However, investors are keenly watching for signs of new growth drivers beyond its projection of $1 trillion in revenue from its Blackwell and Rubin platforms by late 2027.

While Nvidia is expected to continue its strong performance, with its April quarter revenue anticipated to surge by 79%, it also faces new risks such as potential supply constraints and data center construction delays, alongside profitability pressures. The earnings report results are thus poised to be a crucial test of its continued AI supremacy.
