Lee Won-taek Accuses Kim Gwan-young of Aiding Rebellion
Lee Won-taek, the Democratic Party candidate for Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Governor, has raised suspicions by defining independent candidate Kim Gwan-young's past actions as 'complicity in rebellion'. Lee held a press conference at Jeonju City Hall that day, claiming that Kim Gwan-young followed the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's directives related to emergency martial law at the time.
However, Lee pointed out that the directives themselves were illegal and lacked legal basis, emphasizing that the actions of Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon and Gwangju Mayor Kang Ghi-jung, who refused these illegal orders, helped protect citizens' rights. Lee did add, however, that he had found no evidence that Kim Gwan-young had the intention to undermine the constitutional order.
In response, Kim Gwan-young's camp pushed back, calling the 'complicity in rebellion' accusation malicious character assassination, despite a special prosecutor's decision to clear him. Kim's side criticized Lee for being lenient regarding allegations of his meal expenses being paid for, and urged him to take responsibility for his political career.
