One South Korean Ship Safely Exits Strait of Hormuz After Government Talks
Amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, which led to restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, 26 South Korean-flagged vessels were stranded inside the strait.
On the 20th, one of these 26 ships successfully navigated through the strait following consultations between the South Korean government and Iranian authorities. The vessel exited the strait by following a route designated by Iran.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the vessel that passed through this time was the oil tanker 'Universal Winner,' operated by HMM. The government and the shipping company emphasized that they did not pay any tolls or any other form of compensation to Iran.
The government plans to continue consultations with Iran to ensure the remaining 25 South Korean vessels can also safely exit the strait.
