Massachusetts City Scraps Gunshot Detection Tech Amid Racism Concerns
The Cambridge City Council in Massachusetts has decided to end its contract for the 'ShotSpotter' gunshot detection technology. This technology detects gunshots in real-time and alerts the police.
The council accepted residents' claims that the technology unfairly surveils marginalized communities. Residents pointed out that ShotSpotter technology leads to 'surveillance' of residents in specific areas.
The decision comes about a week after a recent shooting incident. The city council had been discussing the repeal of this technology since April.
