The poll to select a single candidate for the Ulsan mayoral race in the upcoming June 3 local elections is facing disruptions due to the unilateral declaration of suspension by Candidate Kim Sang-wook's side. Candidate Kim Jong-hoon of the Progressive Party is countering with the stance that the poll should proceed as per the original agreement.
Kim Sang-wook's Democratic Party camp announced on May 24 that the ongoing unification poll was being suspended due to the discovery of 'irregularities' and suspicions of organized intervention by certain factions. Kim Du-kwan, head of Kim Sang-wook's campaign headquarters, explained that the poll was halted after the survey agency detected anomalous trends exceeding prediction ranges and signs of organized intervention, stating it was an unavoidable decision to prevent distortion of public opinion.
However, Kim Jong-hoon's Progressive Party camp declared the unilateral suspension unacceptable, arguing it violates the spirit of the unification agreement. They refuted receiving any specific grounds or explanations regarding the alleged irregularities and urged the poll to proceed as agreed.
The suspension of this unification poll could significantly impact the political landscape in the Ulsan region for the June 3 local elections. If the strategy for the Democratic Party and the Progressive Party to field a single candidate against the conservative party's nominee is disrupted, it could introduce variables into the local political terrain.
