Jeonbuk Education Transforms Learning Environment with AI-Powered Future Classrooms

The Jeonbuk Office of Education has revolutionized classroom environments by distributing smart devices to all students across the province through its AI and digital-based future education policies. The smart device distribution rate, which was among the lowest nationwide at the end of 2022, has been elevated to a level where every student receives a device within four years. The Jeonbuk Office of Education increased the smart device distribution rate to 57.6% in 2023 and completed the distribution of smart devices to all students from 4th grade elementary to 12th grade high school in 2024. This initiative was aimed at enabling student-centered, participatory learning. Smart devices have become an everyday teaching tool in classrooms, not just special equipment for a few pilot schools.

The Jeonbuk Office of Education has implemented policies to strengthen AI and digital education, including streamlining smart device management systems, operating regional service centers, and introducing criteria for exempting teachers from compensation liability. By 2025, the utilization rate of smart devices in classes is projected to reach 88%.

The 'Digital Tutor' system supports teachers in lesson planning and device utilization, aiding in AI EdTech-based lesson operation and student device usage. The Jeonbuk Office of Education has expanded the number of schools receiving digital tutor support from 225 last year to 250 this year. One middle school teacher reported that their workload for lesson operation has decreased since receiving digital tutor support, and it has helped teachers adapt to digital classes.

Digital citizenship education for students has also been enhanced. The creation of generative AI ethics educational materials and digital etiquette webtoons has helped students cultivate proper digital usage habits and ethical awareness. Following the spread of generative AI, cases of educating students on issues like deepfakes, fake news, and personal information protection, integrated into the school curriculum, have increased.

Beyond simple smart device utilization, the office is accelerating the establishment of an AI-based learning support system. The core of this effort is the development of the 'AI-customized Teaching and Learning Platform (AIEP)'. AIEP is an integrated platform that analyzes individual student learning data to provide personalized learning support and assists teachers with class management and administrative tasks. It is already undergoing pilot operation in some schools, where teachers can monitor students' learning engagement and comprehension levels in real-time through an AI-based class dashboard. It has also become possible to provide supplementary explanations or individual assignments based on the analysis of students' learning patterns.

The generative AI service 'JeonbukGPT' has also been introduced. JeonbukGPT is a platform designed to support teachers in creating lesson materials and managing administrative tasks, focusing on reducing teachers' repetitive workload by assisting with lesson plan writing, material summarization, and image generation, thereby freeing up time for lesson preparation.

The Jeonbuk Office of Education is expanding its AI education direction from simple technology utilization to a focus on ethics and judgment capabilities, strengthening AI literacy alongside critical thinking and digital ethics education. Yoo Jeong-gi, acting superintendent of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education, visited a pilot site of AIEP and stated that AI and digital technologies should move beyond mere device usage to support student growth and teaching.

The transformation, which began with smart device distribution, has extended to AI-based personalized learning, digital citizenship education, and the expansion of teacher support systems. With the core of digital education lying not in mere technology adoption but in student growth and teaching innovation, attention is turning to the future achievements of Jeonbuk Education.
