Israel Expands Ground Offensive in Lebanon, Recaptures Beaufort Castle After 25 Years

Israel's ground forces have fully engaged Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, by recapturing Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon after 25 years. Beaufort Castle, situated on high ground overlooking Israel's northern Galilee region and Hezbollah's stronghold of Nabatieh, has been identified by the Israeli military as a rocket launch site for Hezbollah.

Israeli forces expanded their front line in Lebanon on May 29, crossing into the country and advancing 30 km north of the border to the Litani River.

The capture of Beaufort Castle has emerged as a significant variable that could influence the ceasefire conditions proposed by Iran, which is currently in talks with the United States regarding a ceasefire. Iran, which is discussing a memorandum of understanding for an end to hostilities with the US, has presented a ceasefire in Lebanon as a negotiation condition. The expansion of the Israeli ground offensive could therefore impact the ongoing peace talks. The effect of the Beaufort Castle capture and the expanded front line in Lebanon on the ceasefire negotiations remains to be seen.
