AI Sets New Standard in Healthcare
AI agents are bringing innovation to healthcare settings, enabling patient-centered, focused care. Globally, healthcare workforce shortages and increasing demand pose significant problems, with the World Health Organization (WHO) projecting a deficit of 11 million healthcare workers by 2030. Many experts are leveraging AI tools to enhance work efficiency, deploying AI agents for complex back-office tasks, collaboration with medical teams, and patient triage, thereby reducing clinicians' cognitive load and improving the quality of patient care.
Many healthcare professionals point to slow or outdated technology as exacerbating administrative burdens. While the U.S. transitioned patient data to Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in the early 2000s, this data remains fragmented and reliant on manual input. Dr. Ashis Barad, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, explains that new telemedicine services or digital therapeutic tools show similar limitations.
Dr. Barad emphasizes that AI agents are fundamentally different from existing technologies. AI agents autonomously make decisions, search for information from authoritative clinical sources, and learn iteratively over time, helping medical professionals focus on higher-level patient care.
At HSS, AI agents have already been deployed in several areas. They are now handling complex insurance claims that previously took weeks and involved HSS staff as well as external contractors. The AI agents process 1,100 claims per month, reducing the time spent in the insurance claim denial phase from 45 minutes to 5 minutes and boosting the success rate of those claims from 65% to 100% within nine months. HSS now handles all insurance claims internally.
Building on these successes, HSS is currently collaborating with AI agent developer Ema Unlimited to introduce AI scheduling and patient triage services in non-clinical, patient-facing areas. These services are available 24/7 via web, text, and phone. The AI agents are trained on all context and rules, comprehensively considering a patient's location, insurance coverage, and physician availability to facilitate the most appropriate appointment with medical staff.
