Democratic Party Dominates Jeonnam-Gwangju Local Elections

In the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections, the Democratic Party of Korea achieved an overwhelming victory in the elections for basic local government heads and local council members in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions.

According to the vote tally for the local elections held on June 3rd, a total of 438 elected officials were confirmed for basic local government heads in 27 cities, districts, and counties, as well as for provincial and basic council members in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions, excluding metropolitan mayors/governors. The results from the National Election Commission's vote count show the Democratic Party securing 355 seats, followed by independents with 31, the Progressive Party with 27, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party with 20, the Justice Party with 4, and the People Power Party with 1.

In the Gwangju mayoralty elections for its five districts, the Democratic Party won all five seats. In the elections for basic local government heads across 22 cities and counties in Jeonnam, Democratic Party candidates were elected in 17 locations. For basic council seats, the Democratic Party secured 239 out of a total of 320 seats (74.6%) in the five district councils of Gwangju and the 22 city/county councils of Jeonnam. The Progressive Party fielded 22 elected officials, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party 16, the Justice Party 4, and independents 39. The People Power Party did not secure any elected officials in the basic council elections in these regions.
