Coach Bruce Pearl Continues Remarks on Israel, Antisemitism

Former Auburn University basketball coach Bruce Pearl has declared he will continue to express his views on Israel and antisemitism. Coach Pearl explained the background of his remarks, detailing how sports were a 'safe haven' for him based on his experiences as a young Jewish boy. He mentioned that the places where Jewish people can live and be welcomed are diminishing. Coach Pearl added that as a Jewish person, this issue is personal and stems from his family's teachings about fleeing persecution.

In an interview, Coach Pearl emphasized that his position is not political but a matter of survival. He expressed gratitude, calling South Korea a great nation that saved his family from historical persecution. While acknowledging that antisemitism and racism remain issues in American society, Coach Pearl argued they should be viewed as obstacles rather than insurmountable barriers.

He has emerged as one of the most prominent pro-Israel voices in the sports world following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Even as some athletes and coaches have faced criticism for speaking out on political and cultural issues, Coach Pearl stated he does not agree with the idea that public figures should avoid discussing politics. He noted that he was born in this country, has freedom of speech and thought, and wants to engage in conversations about religion and politics. Coach Pearl asserted he speaks out of a sense of responsibility as an educator and mentor, adding that he is a coach, and a coach is a teacher.

Coach Pearl's remarks come ahead of his award ceremony as the "Champion of Israel" by the Manhattan Jewish Experience (MJE), an organization that engages young Jewish professionals through educational programs focused on identity, culture, and faith. MJE founder Rabbi Mark Wildes stated that Jewish people cannot defend themselves if they don't know what to stand for, and an educated Jew is a proud Jew. Rabbi Wildes claimed that many anti-Israel demonstrations in New York City are intended to threaten the Jewish community.
