HD Hyundai Expands SMR Business to Ship Applications

HD Hyundai is expanding its SMR business into the maritime sector, having received basic approval from the UK's Lloyd's Register (LR) for a 'Large Car Carrier Concept Design Applying Molten Salt Reactor (MSR)' at Posidonia 2026 in Greece.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are next-generation nuclear technologies that are smaller and safer than conventional reactors, and can be built independently. SMRs are small reactors that integrate key components such as steam generators, coolant pumps, and pressurizers into a single vessel. They are gaining attention as a next-generation power source due to their smaller footprint and enhanced safety compared to large conventional reactors. In maritime transport, they are discussed as a decarbonization alternative for long-haul vessels.

HD Hyundai began full-scale investment in next-generation nuclear technology in 2022, and has been strengthening its SMR technology acquisition and commercialization efforts, including a $30 million investment in the US SMR company TerraPower and signing a basic agreement for sodium reactor supply.

The acquisition of basic approval for the 'Large Car Carrier Concept Design Applying Molten Salt Reactor (MSR)' is an achievement involving HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Glovis, G-Marine Service, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. This represents a crucial step in concretizing and realizing a next-generation eco-friendly ship model that combines shipbuilding, logistics, and nuclear research capabilities.
