Warnings have been issued that AI chatbots could weaken humans' ability to pay attention. Gloria Mark, a psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, who has studied digital technology and human interaction for 30 years, pointed out that the spread of AI chatbots could further exacerbate the shortening of attention spans.

In 2003, the average attention span for adult volunteers was 2 minutes and 30 seconds, but it significantly decreased to 75 seconds in an experiment conducted in 2012. Subsequent studies from 2014 to 2020 showed attention spans shortening to an average of 47 seconds, with frequent shifts in attention increasing stress and negatively impacting work performance and emotional well-being.

Mark expressed concern that this decline in attention will be worsened by new technologies like AI chatbots and emphasized the need to find ways to regain it.
