Pantech Transforms into Global Patent Specialist Leveraging 1400 Patents
Pantech, formerly renowned for its 'SKY' smartphones, has transformed into a global patent specialist company, leveraging its portfolio of over 1400 core patents. Having ceased smartphone manufacturing, Pantech is now using its patents to file lawsuits against major tech companies in China and the US, reversing the historical trend where Korean companies were predominantly defendants in such cases. Pantech's weapon of choice is four key standard essential patents (SEPs) for mobile communication developed by Korean engineers, technologies that have become essential infrastructure for 5G and LTE smartphones worldwide.
After halting smartphone production in 2017, Pantech has pivoted to become a global patent management company (NPE) by utilizing its patent assets, numbering over 1400. Pantech has gained the upper hand against Chinese smartphone giant OnePlus in a 5G/LTE communication patent infringement lawsuit, securing a court order for the submission of the original settlement agreement. Beyond Chinese firms, Pantech also pressured Google in Japan, leading to a license agreement after demanding a sales ban for the 'Pixel 7'.
On July 3, 2024, Pantech initiated a global patent offensive, filing four SEP patent infringement lawsuits related to LTE/5G against 17 companies, including Lenovo and TCL, in a US court. The company also filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC), requesting import bans and sales suspensions.
