The Democratic Party of Korea has entered a competitive phase to elect its next party leader immediately after the conclusion of the June 3rd local elections. The party is shifting into this leadership race mode on the 7th and is beginning discussions to hold a national convention as early as the beginning of September. According to party bylaws and regulations, a preparatory committee for the convention must be established 50 days prior to candidate registration.

Regarding the results of the June 3rd local elections, Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum stated in a speech in Gwangju, "It's time to re-examine our winning formula." On the same day, Representative Song Young-gil remarked on the defeats in fiercely contested districts, "The party leader bears all political responsibility."

Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum has formalized his resignation from the premiership, paving the way for his return to Yeouido [political district], while Representative Song Young-gil is preparing to run for party leader.
