In the 8th National Simultaneous Local Elections, Democratic Party candidate Kim Jeong-jung has won the Yangyang County mayoral election in Gangwon Province. Kim Jeong-jung secured victory by obtaining 9,026 votes, accounting for 50.53% of the total electorate, defeating People Power Party candidate Kim Ho-yeol (8,262 votes) and independent candidate Ko Je-chul (576 votes).

The election outcome is assessed as Kim Jeong-jung successfully overcoming the 'risk' posed by the negative impact of former Mayor Kim Jin-ha's alleged sex offenses and bribery charges involving constituents. Previously, former Mayor Kim Jin-ha lost his position after his prison sentence for sex offenses and bribery charges involving constituents was finalized by the Supreme Court, leading to several months of administrative vacuum and chaos in Yangyang County.

Securing 1,084 votes in the early voting served as a stepping stone for victory. In Yangyang-eup, the region's largest voting bloc, Kim Jeong-jung garnered 3,703 votes, leading Kim Ho-yeol by 308 votes. The election result is interpreted as reflecting the residents' 'demand for normalization of county administration and change' after experiencing administrative vacuum and chaos.

The voter turnout recorded 72.8%, the highest among Gangwon Province's 18 cities and counties. Immediately after being elected, Kim Jeong-jung stated, 'I will fulfill the will of the residents who desire a changed Yangyang,' vowing to unite fragmented public sentiment to achieve Yangyang's renewed leap forward. The transition committee for the Yangyang County mayor's office was launched on the 5th and has begun assessing the current situation and detailing campaign pledges.
