Jeonbuk Swept by Democratic Party in 14 Local Chief Elections; Landslide Victory in Local Polls
The 9th nationwide local elections resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Democratic Party in the Jeonbuk region, as they secured all 14 mayoral and county chief positions. This election further solidified the party's strong hold in key regional posts, including the Jeonbuk governorship. In the Jeonbuk Provincial Council, the Democratic Party secured 42 out of a total of 44 seats. Of the 38 district council members elected, 25 (65.8%) were chosen without opposition.
A total of 68 women were elected as provincial and county council members in the Jeonbuk region, an increase of nine from the previous local elections and a record high. These 68 women constitute 27.8% of all elected provincial and county council members in Jeonbuk. However, no women were elected as local chiefs (mayors or county heads) in the Jeonbuk region.
KBS Jeonju reports, under the headline '68 Women Elected as Jeonbuk Local Council Members... 'Record High',' that the latest local elections saw the highest number of women elected to local councils in history. In contrast, Jeonju MBC, with the headline 'Low Election Rate for Women in Jeonbuk Provincial and County Councils... 'Zero' Heads of Local Governments,' pointed out that the percentage of women elected was lower than the national average and that no women were elected as local chiefs. Jeonju MBC evaluated that the 27.8% female election rate falls short of the national average of 34%, highlighting the limited advancement of women into leadership positions in local government.
