Democratic Party of Korea to Elect New Leader at August 17 National Convention

The Democratic Party of Korea will hold its national convention on August 17 to elect a new party leader.

Secretary-General Cho explained that institutional arrangements concerning the timing and procedures of the national convention will be finalized through this week's Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday, the Party Affairs Committee on Thursday, and next week's Central Committee. The party plans to secure the necessary time for procedural progress by amending the supplementary provisions of the party constitution.

To prepare for the national convention, a Convention Preparation Committee and an Election Management Committee will be formed, followed by the candidate registration process for party leader and supreme council members. The method for electing the party leader involves a preliminary round followed by a main contest if there are four or more candidates, with the final leader and supreme council members being determined through regional delegate contests.
