Caregiver Purchases Used Car on 60-Month Installment Plan Using Patient's Name
Someone purchased a used car on a 60-month full installment plan using the name of a severely ill patient at a nursing hospital who is paralyzed from the waist down and unable to drive. This was reportedly carried out by the caregiver who was supposed to be the patient's hands and feet. The scheme was recently discovered by the patient's family upon receiving a car insurance policy.
The caregiver took the patient, who had difficulty moving, in a wheelchair to a used car dealership. Exploiting the fact that they shared the same last name as the victimized patient, the caregiver claimed to be their sibling to proceed with the vehicle contract.
Two days after the vehicle purchase, 4 million won was transferred from the victimized patient's check card and used for payments at restaurants and bathhouses.
The caregiver accompanied the patient during hospital transfers, despite family objections, and did not leave the hospital until the nursing hospital staff forced them out. The nursing hospital explained that they had allowed the caregiver to leave the premises, believing they were taking the patient out for exercise.
The caregiver claimed to reporters that both the car and the money were borrowed and that they would repay it soon. However, they are not responding to police requests to come in for questioning. Police are investigating the exact circumstances with the caregiver.
The patient, whose condition had worsened, passed away last week. The bereaved family expressed their deep sorrow and regret, stating they felt too neglectful and were truly sorry to their husband.
