Choi Chang-won, Kim Face Warrant Hearing Over Alleged Illegal Political Funds

Choi Chang-won, the representative of the minor party "Tomorrow, Future" (Naeilro Miraero, now affiliated with "Pro-US Alliance"), and Kim, the representative of "Patriotic Banners" (Aeguk Hyeonsumak), will have their detention status decided on the 7th through a pre-arrest detention hearing (yeongjangsiljil simsa) over charges of producing and displaying banners containing anti-China sentiment and election fraud conspiracy theories using illegal political funds. Kim Jihyun, a presiding judge at the Seoul Southern District Court handling warrant requests, will conduct the hearings for both individuals on the afternoon of the 7th to make a final legal determination on the necessity of their detention.

The investigation originated from a complaint filed by the National Election Commission with the police in July of last year, alleging that "Tomorrow, Future" had received political funds through an undeclared account. According to authorities' investigations, the funds misappropriated by the group were reportedly used to produce and display banners that incited anti-China sentiment and spread election fraud conspiracy theories.

To uncover the facts, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit has been focusing on proving the criminal association, conducting searches and seizures of Kim and others in January.
