Key Warning Signs and Evacuation Tips for Landslide Risks

As the risk of landslides increases due to torrential rains during the rainy season, it is essential to recognize early warning signs and know evacuation procedures. Landslide forecasts are issued in stages—advisory, preliminary warning, and warning—based on the maximum amount of water the soil can retain.

Key warning signs include water suddenly gushing from a slope, which strongly indicates an impending landslide. If trees sway or fall despite the absence of wind, or if ground vibrations are felt, it should be considered that a landslide has already begun.

If hazardous weather is forecasted, or advisories for heavy rain, typhoons, or strong winds are in effect, avoid outdoor activities near forests. When a landslide advisory is issued, residents in vulnerable areas should familiarize themselves with evacuation sites designated by administrative authorities and evacuate immediately upon spotting signs of a landslide. If a landslide warning or evacuation order is announced, cut off gas and electricity supplies before moving to designated shelters, schools, or other safe locations.

If a landslide occurs while in the mountains, move to higher ground at a right angle to the direction of the slide.
