Brazil Joins Retaliatory Tariff Effort Against U.S. 25% Tariffs
The Brazilian government stated that the U.S. decision to impose a 25% tariff on Brazilian imports "lacks legitimacy" and announced that it would immediately proceed with retaliatory tariffs and sanction procedures based on the Reciprocity Law.
Previously, the U.S. decided to impose the 25% tariff, citing Section 301 of trade laws and alleging unfair trade practices in digital commerce, intellectual property, and ethanol market access.
The Brazilian government refuted the U.S. claims of unfair trade by noting that 76% of imports from the U.S. last year were duty-free, and the average tariff rate was merely 3.1%.
