EU Orders Google to Open Android to AI Rivals

The European Commission ordered Google on the 16th (local time) to open its Android operating system to rival artificial intelligence (AI) assistants and share search data with competing search firms. Starting next July, Google must open 11 core functions of the Android operating system to AI assistants from competitors like OpenAI.

Additionally, starting in January, it must provide anonymized search data to rival search engines and AI chatbots.

This measure follows the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which regulates the market dominance of major online platforms. It was based on the assessment that Google's 'Gemini' holds a more advantageous position than its competitors.
