Rep. Jeong Cheong-rae Raises 380 Million Won in Just One Day

380 million won was deposited overnight into the donation account of former Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae, who is running for the party leadership in the August 17 convention. Former leader Jeong revealed this on the 17th via his social media, stating, "This is overwhelming. Thank you so much." It is believed that the funds rushed in after a YouTube broadcast claiming he was still 20 million won short of his donation target went viral. The fundraising limit for a party leadership candidate is 150 million won.

He stated that he must manually refund 360 million won of the deposited amount but noted that because it was the weekend, he could not close the account, causing donations to continue to pour in. Former leader Jeong requested supporters stop sending money to his personal account and instead asked them to donate to the accounts of supreme council candidates Choi Min-hee, Lee Sung-yoon, and Han Min-su, who are affiliated with his pro-Jeong faction. He also announced that he would soon open a separate account dedicated to fundraising for his party leadership candidacy.

The Democratic Party closed candidate registration for the party leadership election the previous day, the 16th, and plans to select the final three candidates through a preliminary primary on the 21st.
