Democratic Party Urged to Renew Policies After Losing Youth and Women in June 3 Elections

Criticism has emerged from within the Democratic Party that it must pursue policy renewal and present a vision to win back young people and women ahead of the August 17 National Convention, after suffering a loss of support from these demographics in the June 3 local elections. National Assembly Vice Speaker Nam In-soon and former Youth Chairman Mo Kyong-jong called for party affairs reform, drawing lessons from the electoral defeat—a stance that differs from the majority faction within the party.

Rep. Nam acknowledged that the Democratic Party had turned its back on its existing base of women in their 20s and 30s by responding passively to gender equality platform amid deepening gender conflicts. She stated that the party must present concrete priorities and a vision for solving realistic difficulties such as housing, jobs, and safety at the National Convention.

Meanwhile, regret was expressed over the failure to introduce the 'elected youth supreme council member' system at the National Convention. Rep. Mo criticized discussions on representation for having been reduced to mere political calculations, emphasizing that the party must proactively discover youth agendas to resolve the distrust of young people.
