North Korean PM Pak Thae Song Visits China for Strategic Talks with Xi Jinping, Economic Discussions with Li Qiang

During his visit to China on the 10th, North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song engaged in strategic communication with Wang Huning, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and discussed economic cooperation with Premier Li Qiang, marking the entry of both nations into a phase of deepening comprehensive cooperation.

Im Eul-chul, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, analyzed that the direct involvement of Wang Huning—a key strategist for Xi Jinping ranked fourth in the party hierarchy—indicates a practical purpose aimed at structuring a new framework for North Korea-China relations. Yang Moo-jin, a chair professor at the University of North Korean Studies, explained that amid external variables such as the launch of the second Trump administration and strengthened U.S.-South Korea-Japan cooperation, China is seeking to restore the alliance blood ties to counter the North Korea-Russia proximity and maintain its influence on the Korean Peninsula.

The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between North Korea and China, signed in 1961, includes a provision for automatic military support in the event of an external armed attack. As the growing alignment between the two nations becomes visible, the geopolitical landscape surrounding the Korean Peninsula is shifting toward increasingly complex dynamics.
