From Waste to Warmth: Baseball Stadium Heating and the Evolution of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Waste heat is now keeping our neighborhoods warm. A hydrogen fuel cell power plant in Incheon's Namgu has established an energy virtuous cycle by utilizing waste heat to supply heating and hot water to a nearby baseball stadium and indoor swimming pool.

When hydrogen derived from natural gas combines with oxygen, high temperatures of over 350 degrees Celsius are generated. A new technology has been introduced to collect this heat, previously discarded for cooling generators, and reuse it for public convenience facilities. The system utilizes waste heat generated during the hydrogen fuel cell power generation process to maintain heating for the baseball stadium and a constant water temperature for the indoor swimming pool, operating by harnessing surplus thermal energy without additional external energy input.

Through this facility in Incheon's Namgu, an eco-friendly energy virtuous cycle that recycles waste heat is being realized. It is establishing itself as a case study that goes beyond simple power production to utilize the resulting thermal energy for the daily lives of residents.
