Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on the 21st (local time) that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and agreed to strengthen future trade negotiations regarding the announcement of a 50% tariff hike. In a meeting with reporters in the capital, Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney pointed out that this measure is the latest in a series of actions that directly violate the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA).

"We have agreed to step up negotiations over the coming weeks, and our team looks forward to that," he said, emphasizing, "Our first goal is to reach a comprehensive agreement that benefits both countries."

President Trump signed a proclamation the previous day, the 20th, imposing a 50% additional tariff on select Canadian products, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. Prime Minister Carney stated that if the U.S. proceeds with the tariff imposition as planned, Canada will consider all options. These tariff measures are expected to significantly increase export costs for Canadian-related industries, having a considerable impact on the economies of both nations.
