Govt Detains Vessel 'Prada' at Pyeongtaek Port for UNSC Sanctions Violations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it has detained the vessel 'Prada', suspected of violating United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions against North Korea, at Pyeongtaek Port. According to a ministry official, the government conducted a joint investigation with relevant ministries in March based on intelligence regarding the ship's involvement in past sanctions violations after it docked at Pyeongtaek Port.

Following the investigation, which confirmed the vessel's involvement, the government is proceeding with detention procedures as a measure mandated by the UNSC resolution.

The vessel was recently specifically named in a multinational joint statement, and satellite imagery has captured it appearing to smuggle North Korean coal. The Prada was specifically mentioned in a joint statement issued in May by South Korea, the U.S., Japan, and 10 other nations, along with the European Union, urging the enforcement of sanctions against North Korea. Furthermore, according to a report by Voice of America (VOA), satellite imagery captured the vessel loading coal smuggled from North Korea's Nampo Port in September and December of last year.
